On a construction site, the technology is often the last thing planned and the first thing compromised. Five decisions to make early:
- Comms room location and size — ventilated, lockable, with dedicated power circuits and room for a full-height rack.
- Data point count — two per desk, one per printer, TV, access point, camera, door reader and phone; add 20% spare.
- Cable grade — Cat6A for anything that may need 10 Gb/s or high-power PoE; fibre between floors and buildings.
- Ceiling positions for Wi-Fi access points and cameras, mapped from a survey, not guessed.
- Power protection — UPS sized for the rack, and which circuits must stay up when the mains drops.
Why it matters
Adding one data point after the ceilings are finished can cost more than ten installed during rough-in. A missing conduit can delay occupancy.
